South Carolina UCV Top Hat
Item #: AA951
This is a United Confederate Veterans top hat from the late 1800's. There are numerous photographs of Confederate soldiers wearing these top hats during the war. It seems that most of them were from units deployed in the Western theater, from Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, Georgia and Louisiana. So it's a little surprising to find this one adorned with a South Carolina state seal button! The condition of this felt material hat is very good. The felt is a light gray color, and has no moth damage. There is a light stain on the very top of the hat, and the light brown hat band is all frayed. There is a small matching brown band sewn around the rim of the band that is also unraveling. The crown stands 6 1/2" tall and the brim is 2" and is rolled. The inside sports a brown leather sweatband that measures 2 1/8" wide. It is securely attached to the hat and shows some staining from wear. There are no makers marks or labels anywhere. At the top of the hat is a South Carolina state seal button. It is attached to a small piece of black felt and secure to the hat by a small strip of rawhide. The button has a back mark of John Rugheimer & Sons. Referencing McGuinn and Bazelon's book "American Military Button Makers and Dealers" it lists Rugheimer but states, "no information available; backmark on post Civil War S.C. buttons." That little piece of felt really makes the gilt on the button pop! Just above the hat band is a beautiful UCV hat badge. It also has a piece of black felt attached to it that really makes the UCV letters stand out. The badge is 2 3/4" wide and 1 3/4" high. This top hat really stands out all on it's own and would add to any UCV collection!
