This is a Pattern 1856 Enfield Short Rifle, more commonly referred to as the Sergeant's rifle. The NCO rifle is normally 49 1/2" overall with a 33" long barrel. This one has been shortened to carbine length, being 33 1/4' overall and having a 17 3/4" barrel. This isn't a Johnny Reb in the field shortening job either! It is well known that the Confederates were short on cavalry carbines and were altering battlefield pickups and damaged weapons into carbines. This little beauty had to be done at an armory. The barrel is chamfered, the stock shortened, a pewter nose cap and silver escutcheons were added. The ramrod was replaced with a correct length wooden rod metal tipped on each end. A thimble for the ramrod was soldered onto the barrel. The shortened barrel still retains original blueing and is lightly pitted around the bolster area. The English proofs marks are clear enough to read from across the room. It bears the crossed scepters and number 25, indicating a .577 caliber. To look as great as this gun does, it did a lot of shooting! There is no rifling left and gauges out at .62 caliber. There are some spots in the bore that are lightly rusted, but no pitting. The ramrod thimble is still present, but the solder has broken. The lockplate, hammer, trigger guard and butt plate are all iron hardware. They all have the same gun metal gray patina, attesting to how long this one has been together. There is no rust or pitting on any of the metal. The lock plate is marked 1861 over Tower forward of the hammer and has a crown to the rear of the hammer. The mechanics have a problem, with the hammer holding at full cock only if the trigger is pushed back forward, most likely a worn sear. This can be repaired if the buyer wishes. The rear of the trigger guard shows where a sing swivel used to be. The walnut stock is beautiful and flawless! The stock flat opposite the lockplate has the stamp D CLARKE, a stock maker. The wrist is checkered and shows very slight wear. Overall this is an absolutely beautiful weapon from the Civil War era. It will make a fine addition to any carbine or cavalry weapons collection, and priced to go!
