This is a United Confederate Veterans kepi from the late 1800's, circa 1880. The wool material is Cadet Gray and has scattered moth damage over the entire kepi. The black tarred visor is in good condition and securely attached. There is some crazing present. The leather chin strap is retained to the kepi by Georgia state seal buttons. The buttons have a nice mellow golden patina and are back marked W.G. Mintzer, Phil D. Mintzer was a known button maker that supplied buttons to state militia's during the Civil War. The brown drawstring type liner is in good condition. The sweat band unfortunately is no longer with this one. The coolest thing about this old veterans kepi is the gilt quatrefoil representing a 2nd Lieutenant's rank. The stitching on this one is very strong, the only flaw is where the quatrefoil joins the center band in the front of the kepi. It is unstitched but could easily be repaired. There are no makers marks, labels, tags or any other identifying marks on the kepi. If you collect United Confederate Veteran items then you should take a good hard look at this one!
