This is a Civil War era clip point side knife that came into the shop was part of the collection I have been listing recently. Other than the Spanish Southwestern spurs all the other items in the collection were of the Civil War era. The overall length of this clip point is 12 1/2", with a blade length of 7 3/4". The blade is 1 7/32" wide at the hilt and has a spine that is 1/8" and has a very good balance in your hand. It even retains some period sharpness and has taken on a dark gray patina. The oval shaped cross guard is 2 1/2" long and made of brass, as is the ferrule. The wooden handle is cracked along the entire length on the top and bottom side, as is common with wood shrinkage over time. Instead of a ferrule or "pommel cap", the back of this handle has six wraps of double strand sword wire. The obverse side of the handle has a silver piece 1 1/8" by 1/2" inlaid into the handle. There is no makers mark on the knife, but it is very well made. It will complement any Civil War collection.
