This is a United Confederate Veterans kepi from the early 1900's. The construction is typical of those worn during the Civil War, but is a larger size than most I have seen. I wear a size 7 5/8 and this one fits me like a glove. The wool material is gray with a black band around the bottom and a black top. There is some moth damage, nothing major, mentioned for accuracy. There is also a small tear dead center at the top about a half inch long. The brim is firmly attached and has no damage at all. This one sports Maryland State seal buttons. The leather sweat band is mostly gone, just a small part across the front remains. The lining has a square piece of material approximately 3" x 4" missing and looks to have been cut out. It is in the location where a makers label would have been. All the stitching on this kepi is still very tight. The gray and black material still retains nice color, as well as the black tarred brim. It could definitely be worn today and would look outstanding on a mannequin display. If you have a UCV collection this will help to round it out, especially if you're missing a Maryland Rebel representative!
