This is a Spanish style iron spur from the American southwest made during the early 1800's. It measures approximately 6 1/4" in length. It measures 3 1/4" across the widest part of the opening. The rowel on this thing is huge, with all eight tines measuring 1 1/4" long! It still rotates freely. There is some very ornate engraving on the exterior of the spur. The side that was worn to the inside of the boot are a little worn. The side of the spur that was worn to the outside of the boot is more visible. The area that attaches the rowel to the body of the spur has been engraved to resemble a swan. The entire spur has been painted silver at some point long ago. I think this was done to help preserve the spur from rusting. It was done some time ago, as the side of the spur that would be to the inside of the boot has lost all the silver. This would make a great decorator piece for those that choose the American southwest or Spanish American look.
