This is a Model 1842 Austrian carbine that has been converted to percussion. This short cavalry firearm measures 30" overall and has a 14 1/2" barrel. The bore gages out at a huge .71 caliber, and the smoothbore is turning dark but is not rusted. The front sight is blade type while the rear sight is grooved into the barrel tang. There are numerous stamps visible on the exterior of the barrel, the ELG* in oval stamp of the Liege proof mark is clearly visible. Beside the Liege proof mark is the name ELISE DOJAC. The barrel has not been removed, but most likely there are stamps on the bottom of the barrel also. The lockplate is stamped with the numbers 857, indicating year of production. There is also another proof mark to the rear of the lock. The action works flawlessly, holding half and full cock. The barrel band, trigger guard, sling bar and butt plate are all stamped with the number 75. The double ring sling attachment is still present, as well as the ramrod. The maple stock is in original condition with the original finish in good condition. There is a cheek rest on the left side of the stock. This little hand cannon has an absolutely beautiful matching patina. Both sides of the Civil War were equipped with these carbines early in the war. While it doesn't have any of the traditional Confederate trademarks, initials, unit markings and such, I like to think it rode with some Southern Cavalryman defending his home from the invaders from up North! this will make a great addition to your Cavalry collection, Reb or Yank.
