This is a Model 1863 Type II Springfield rifle musket used during the American Civil War. The Model 1863 derived from improvements to Model 1861, the standard musket in use during the Civil War. The type II Model 1863 will have either an 1864 or 1865 dated lockplate, a single leaf rear sight and the return of springs to retain the barrel bands. The ramrods were either of the tulip head design or knurled and slotted. This rile measures 56" overall, with a barrel length of 40". The original .58 caliber barrel gages out at .60 caliber. The rifling is a little worn, but still strong. The bore is a little brown, but there is no pitting. This one should clean up with little effort. The front sight is made to accommodate a socket type bayonet, the rear sight is a single leaf type. The left side of the barrel near the breech is stamped V/P/Eagle Head. There is no date on the barrel tang. The once national bright barrel now display an eye pleasing silver/gray patina. The lockplate is stamped 1864 behind the hammer and has the Eagle and US/SPRINGFIELD forward of the hammer. The bolster also bears the Eagle stamp though it is faint, like the other barrel stamps. The barrel bands and butt plate are marked with U and US respectively. The trigger guard, nose cap and butt plate have a darker greyish patina than the rest of the metal parts. The ramrod is of the tulip head design and is missing the threaded portion. The walnut stock is in good condition, having no cracks or wood loss anywhere. The flat opposite the lockplate has two cartouches. Carved into the right stock comb is 8 WV, the left PW. The 8th West Virginia Mounted Infantry was organized in November, 1861, in Buffalo, West Virginia. They served mainly in the Virginia and West Virginia area and were redesignated as the 7th West Virginia Cavalry Regiment on 26 January, 1864. Looks like this long arm was issued to a mounted infantryman who just didn't want to let go of his original unit! This is an very nice example of a center piece firearm from the American Civil War.
