This is a reproduction Springfield Model 1863 type II rifle musket used during the American Civil War. The weapon measures 55 1/2" in overall length, with a 39 1/2" barrel. There are no makers marks to identify who manufactured the rifle, but it is well put together. The barrel, lock plate, trigger guard, barrel bands and butt plate all have the national bright finish. The barrel is slightly larger than the original .58 caliber, the bore gage shows .60 caliber. The bore is very bright, no pitting or rust present, and the rifling is excellent. Doesn't appear that this one has been fired much at all. There are no stamps or markings on the barrel anywhere. The front sight is blade sight atop the bayonet lug. The rear sight is a two leaf flip up sight. The barrel bands are stamped with the letter U, and are retained with springs. The lock plate is stamped with the date 1864 behind the hammer and an Eagle/US/SPRINGFIELD forward of the hammer. The action works perfect with the hammer holding in half cock and full cock positions. When the trigger is depressed the hammer falls crisply. The butt plate is stamped with US and fits the stock like a glove. The walnut oiled stock is in great condition, having just a couple of handling dings. There is even a reproduction Springfield sling on this one. The ramrod is of the tulip design and has no threaded section. By 1863 most of the Union Army was equipped with this iconic weapon. This will make a fine weapon for those of you who reenact on the wrong side. pretty cool muzzle loader to go after those monster big racks too! We normally don't have these in the shop, but it is such a beautiful rifle I couldn't say no.
