This is US regulation Model 1855 Light Artillery shell jacket from the Civil War period. The majority of these red trimmed shell jackets were issued to enlisted soldiers in light artillery units. This one is in near mint condition, one that you will never need to upgrade. The stand up collar, red tape piping, buttons and cotton muslin complete lining are all in outstanding condition. The piping on the collar, sleeve cuffs, front, base of the jacket and back of the jacket from the waist to shoulder and belt pillows is flawless and is still a very vibrant red. There are 20 US general service buttons on the jacket, four on the collar, two on each cuff and 12 on the front of the jacket. They all display the same golden patina, obviously having been on the jacket forever. Only one of the buttons on the front has loose stitching, but is still securely attached to the jacket. There is no back mark on any of the buttons. The closure latch and hook are still present and are securely attached to the collar. The full lining has strong stitching throughout. The inner right sleeve has an Ohio Arsenal stamp and three black dots, indicating a very desirable size three. There is one inner pocket on the right side of the jacket. The dark Navy blue wool jacket body is unblemished. The dark blue wool contrasts well with the red piping. This is just an overall fantastic piece of cloth from the Civil War that has survived like it was in a time capsule! If you collect cloth, artillery pieces, or need a center piece for your war room, this is the one.
