Mid 1850's Naval Belt
Item #: AA892
This is an 1850's United States Naval belt from the pre Civil War era. It measures 43" in length and has an average width of 2". This type of belt was utilized by the US Navy from around 1855 through 1862. The leather is still very supple and pliable. There is some crazing and flaking on the outside of the belt while the inside has a worn buff appearance. Sewn to the inside of the belt is a smaller leather strip approximately 13" in length. The end of this adjustment strip is missing, so I'm not sure of the actual total length. On the opposite end of the belt is a small 1 1/8" black japanned roller buckle. The smaller leather strip was used to adjust the fit of the belt to the individual sailor. Once the adjustment for fit was made the larger leather belt covered the adjustment piece by passing through a large leather belt loop. This made the belt appear to be one continuous strip of leather. The stitching on the belt remains very strong. The little roller buckle is securely attached, as well as the belt loop. This one is solid enough to be used on a Naval mannequin display. If you collect United States Naval relics this shouldn't let this rare belt slip by!
