Early 1800's Tennessee Long Rifle
Item #: AA889
This is a full stock, flintlock Tennessee long rifle from the early 1800's. The rifle measures 62" overall, with a 45 3/4" octagonal barrel. This beauty has all the traits of a Tennessee long gun, from the all iron furniture to the exceptionally long barrel tang. The tang measures 6 1/4" long on this one. The browned barrel is smooth on the exterior with just a trace of light pitting and discoloration at the breech end, by the hammer and frizzen. The bore is dark but not pitted or rusted and gauges out at .35 caliber. A buck horn style rear sight has been attached to the barrel 10 1/2" forward of the breech. A small brass blade front sight is attached 1 1/2" back from the muzzle. The lockplate is engraved Ketland & Co. and has simple engraving on the back, behind the hammer. Thomas Ketland was a gun maker from Birmingham, England. He went into business as a gun maker in 1760. In 1790 he began to export guns and parts until 1821. The lockplate, hammer and frizzen all have a dull gray patina. Unfortunately the lock needs some work, as it will not lock. The double set triggers, trigger guard and butt plate have a little darker patina than the lockplate. The iron nose cap matches the barrel in patina. The three iron ramrod thimbles have the same patina as the lockplate. The walnut stock in in very good condition, but does have one period repair. A small section of wood has been replaced just behind the hammer. A picture shows the repaired area. There are two small cracks, one on each side of the stock, that extend back from the nose cap. They are approximately 2" in length. The last crack in the wrist area on the left side of the stock. These are all stress cracks from age and are hair line, mentioned for accuracy and in no way detract from the function or eye appeal of this early firearm. The walnut still has it's original finish, this one has not been redone or sanded. The left stock comb has a check rest. The ramrod is wooden and I believe is original to the rifle. This Tennessee long shooter would look great in any long rifle or antique weapons collection. Don't let it get away!
