Model 1842 Harpers Ferry Musket
Item #: AA885
This is a Model 1842 percussion musket produced at the Harper's Ferry Armory. The Model 1842 was the first regulation musket made at the Springfield and Harper's Ferry Armories with the percussion ignition system. This was the last smoothbore musket made in .69 caliber and the first weapon made at both National armories that was completely interchangeable parts wise. Between the years 1856 and 1859 several thousand Model 42's were altered, having the barrels rifled. This Model 1842 is in it's unaltered smoothbore original condition. It measures 57 3/4' overall, with a 42" barrel. The barrel is a .69 caliber smoothbore with a dark bore and scattered light pitting. The exterior of the barrel retains the majority of the "National Bright" finish. This model didn't come with a rear sight, just a brass blade front sight on the double strap front barrel band. There are no proof marks on the barrel, just the date 1845 stamped onto the barrel tang. The bayonet lug is mounted on the bottom side of the barrel. The three barrel bands and lockplate have the same patina as the barrel. The front and rear sling swivels are still with the musket. The lockplate is marked HARPERS/FERRY/1845 behind the hammer with an eagle over the letters US. The action on this weapon is simply flawless. The hammer positively locks in the both half and full cock and snaps forward when the trigger is depressed. The trigger guard and US marked butt plate have a lot less of the bright finish left. Stands to reason, these two areas of the weapon receive more handling than anywhere else on the weapon. The stock is in it's original condition, no sanding or refinish job here. There are the normal bumps and dings from handling, but no cracks or wood loss anywhere. There is one cartouche on the flat opposite the lockplate. There is also a set of initials, P.B., on the bottom of the stock just forward of the front trigger guard finial. The original ramrod is still with the musket and still has the threads intact. This is an amazing example of a Mexican war era firearm that probably went on to see some service during the American Civil War. It will compliment any Mexican War or military longarms collection!
