This is a non excavated Eagle Infantry button from the Civil War period. This two piece button is of coat size and has an American eagle on the face. The back mark is from D. EVANS & CO. ATTLEBORO MASS. The face is dent free, no mars or blemishes. The eagle is facing to the right, clutching an laurel branch in the right talon and three arrows in the left talon. In the center of the eagle is a shield with the letter I in the center. The majority of the gilt remains, being worn off in the raised areas of the eagle and around the rim. The shank is still with this one, standing perfectly straight and tall and even has the thread still attached! McGuinn and Bazelon's book "American Military Button Makers and Dealers; Their Backmarks & Dates" states that the Daniel Evans firm dated from 1848 after he took over the Robinson uniform button factory. They go on to say that many D Evans back marked buttons have been excavated from Civil War camps. This one is was manufactured during the war years and has survived quite well. It would make a fine addition to your Union Infantry of button collection.
