This is a Model 1864 Cartridge box for a .58 caliber rifled musket from the Civil War. This box is maker marked, with the stamp of Baker & McKenney of New York. This firm received a contract on 17 September, 1864 for 10,000 infantry accoutrements. The cartridge box measures 7 1/8" wide, 5 1/4" tall and 1 5/8" deep. The leather shoulder strap is a little dry, but still flexible. There is a little crazing and flaking, nothing severe. There is no breast plate on the strap and it doesn't look like it ever had one. The leather outer flap has some crazing and flaking along the very top of the flap. The leather closure tab is sewn and riveted on and is in perfect condition. The brass pear shaped finial is straight and tight to the box. Both roller buckles for the shoulder strap are securely attached to the box, as well as both belt loops. The box plate is an oval SNY brass plate. The inner flap for cartridge box tins is stamped BAKER/McKINNEY/NY for the Baker & McKinney company of New York City, New York. The two cartridge box tins are still reporting for duty. They are straight and still have a decent shine to them. The implement pouch flap and closure tab are in good order. The closure loop for the implement pouch has a #2 stamped into it. The stitching is strong throughout the box. This one could still be worn today, it would make a great compliment to a mannequin display!
