Model 1859 Regulation Bit
Item #: AA877
This is an excavated regulation US Model 1859 curb bit from the Civil War era. These bits were a part of the McClellan saddle equipage. There were four variations of this bit. This one is a #2, having the highest port of the four. The bit is in very good condition with both stippled US bosses in place. Both of the rein rings are also present. The only thing missing is the curb chain. The iron bit is moderately pitted over the entire surface, but the piece has been stabilized to prevent further deterioration. The bit holds it's original shape, with just a slight bowing outward of the branches where the headstall attached. This one came into the shop with oral history of being recovered in Washington County, Arkansas, site of the Battle of Prairie Grove. This battle was fought 7 December, 1862 between 9200 Union forces under the command of Brigadier General James G. Blunt and 11,000 Confederate forces under the command of Major General Thomas C. Hindman. The battle was a tactical draw, but is considered a Union victory due to the fact the Confederate forces withdrew from the area. The Union suffered 1251 casualties as compared to the Confederate casualties of 1319. This bit was said to have been recovered on private property near the Illinois River and the Fayetteville road junction many years ago. Nice piece of Western theater history right here.
