This is a British Pattern 1856 Sword bayonet from the Civil War. It is in relic condition, but was not excavated. It measures 27 1/4" overall, with a 22" Yataghan style blade having a 15" fuller. These bayonets can be broken down into three variations by the the locking mortise. I believe this one is a short bar type, according to Pritchard and Huey's book "The English Connection". Examples of the three types are found on page 328. The blade and steel mount appear to have been painted black at some time, and now has a rusty reddish brown appearance. The black knurled leather grips are intact and have very little leather loss. There are no makers marks visible anywhere on this bayonet. The release mechanism still works just fine. These sword bayonets were used with the Enfield Pattern 1856 two band "short" rifles. This would make a great addition to any Civil War collection, especially if you are into the Infantry.
