This is a powder horn made from a cow horn circa 1840 - 1860. The horn is in it's natural shape. This horn measures approximately 13 3/4" in length, 3 1/4" wide at the base, 5/8" wide at the spout and 2 1/2" deep. The horn is in it's natural tan color. The butte plug is retained by five small iron pins. The horn has no suspension rings, but looks to have had one at the center of the butte plug at one time. Apparently a leather strap was attached to the ring on the butte plug and tied around the horn near the spout for carrying. The horn body has the initials Y.H.K. scratched into the horn near the base. The entire horn is covered in floral designs scratched into the horn and then colorized in reds and greens. Above the initials is an American military eagle with shield. Above the eagle is a tent with an American flag flying from it. Above the tent scene is another larger American flag. There is one small crack in the horn, but it is only a surface crack. It is approximately one inch long and is just below the larger American flag. It's possible that this one was used during the Civil War. If you collect early American long arms this will fit in nicely with your collection.
