L.G.&Y. Contract Rifle Musket
Item #: AA853
This is an L.G.&Y. marked contract special model 1862 percussion rifle musket. L.G.&Y. stood for the firm of Lamson, Goodnow and Yale, who had forges at Windsor, Vermont. They were contracted to produce to produce 50,000 Springfield Model 1861 muskets in 1861. The contract produced the required number of muskets between 1862 and 1864. The overall length of the musket is 55 3/4" with the barrel measuring 40". The .58 caliber bore is dark and rusty, but the rifling is still visible. The exterior of the barrel is pitted around the breech, more so around the bolster. There is also a little pitting on the muzzle end on the right side. The barrel has a dark chocolate patina. There are no visible markings on the barrel. The front blade sight is still present but the rear two leaf sight is missing. The lock plate is dated 1862 behind the hammer and has a small eagle motif over the letters US in front of the hammer, along with L.G.&Y./WINDSOR-Vt. below the eagle. The action is very crisp and locks in both half and full cock positions. The hammer snaps forward when the trigger is depressed. The lock plate is lightly pitted and has a dark appearance, but the stamps are visible. The trigger and trigger guard and barrel bands are original. The stock has been sanded and refinished. There are letters scratched into the left stock comb, looks like the name white, but it's hard to make out. The butt plate and ramrod are missing. The nose cap and both sling swivels appear to be modern day replacements. This could make a nice weapon for display with just a little help, or possibly become a reenactors rifle. With a little work, or as is, this is a nice example of an uncommon Civil War long arm.
