This is a United Confederate Veterans reunion jacket from the late 1800's. This seven button coat/jacket is made in the style of a plain sack coat. It is constructed of six panels of high quality gray wool material. There are seven buttons on the single breasted opening. The buttons are of different types, three Eagle General Service, one Eagle I, two flower and one plain faced button. Two of the general service buttons have back marks. One is marked Steele & Johnson Mfg Co. and the other is stamped Extra Quality. The Steele and Johnson Mfg Co came into existence in 1875. The Eagle I button has no back mark. The two flower buttons both have back marks, one stamped Treble Plated, the other is Waterbury. There are no cuff buttons on the sleeves. Though there are no tags or makers stamps in the jacket anywhere, just the #42 ink stamped on the inside of the jacket. The jacket is fully lined, to include the sleeves. There are no exterior or interior pockets. There is no moth damage, but staining on many areas of the jacket. The photo's show all the areas affected. This jacket was most definitely worn by the veteran. There are two UCV buttons pinned to the front of the jacket. One is a delegate's button from the 11th UCV Reunion held in Memphis, Tennessee in May 1901. The center of the badge is adorned with the Confederate 1st National Flag, 2nd National Flag and the Confederate battle Flag. The second and smaller of the two is of the Confederate Reunion held in Dallas, Texas in 1902. A likeness of Robert E. Lee is in the center of this badge. The collar and cuff bunting are red in color, representing the Artillery branch of service. A very small section of stitching is loose on the right side of the collar. The remainder of the machine sewn stitching remains tight in all areas. The jacket is still strong enough to be worn today. If you collect Confederate Artillery this would make a great center for your collection!
