Gutta Percha Match Safe

This is a Gutta Percha match safe from the Civil War era. It measures 1 5/8" wide and 2 3/4" tall. Each side of the safe has a recessed checkered area. One side has a standard military shield while the other side has a raised emblem. There is a ribbed striking area on the flat side of the safe, while the other is rounded. This is one important piece of gear for the field soldier, especially from the Civil War. Along with keeping your powder dry, you also had to keep your matches dry! Cool little piece of Civil War history going on right here.
