German NCO Dress Bayonet
Item #: AA828
This is a German NCO's Dress bayonet from the World War II era. During the reign of the Third Reich numerous blade manufactures produced custom private purchase versions of the S84/98 and K98 bayonets for dress wear. These dress bayonets were manufactured with an assortment of minor optional variations. Enlisted men wore the longer 24.5cm bayonet while Non Commissioned Officers wore a shorter 20cm bayonet. Because of the similarity to the issue bayonets sales were slow at first. An option offered by some blade makers to increase sales was to acid etch the blade with a common motif for a small charge. More personalized etching were available for a more substantial fee. The dress bayonet was accompanied by a black leather frog for Army personnel and brown for Luftwaffe personnel. The bayonet was to be worn on the left side. This dress bayonet measures 12 3/4" overall with a blade length of 7 7/8". The drop forged steel constructed blade is nickel plated with deep fullers to both sides and a swedge to the forward tip. The blade is in fine condition with only slight scabbard runner marks. It has not been sharpened. There are no maker marks or stamps on either ricasso. The original leather washer is still present. The bayonet release stud functions perfectly. The crossguard is one up swept arm a flash guard and an eagle head pommel. Only the tip of the cross guard shows any loss of plating. The diamond grooved black bakelite grips are in perfect condition. They are secured by two dome headed alloy rivets that have been nickel plated. All but one rivet head has lost it's plating. The sheet metal scabbard is straight and retains 85% of it's original black finish. There are small scratched on both sides of the scabbard from throat to tip. The inserted throat, retaining screw and frog lug are all intact. There is no felt plug with this one. If you collect German WWII pieces, this is a nice one to have.
