This is a small grouping of souvenirs from the Gettysburg, Pa area from the 1930's. There is a small child's rifle, a "witness tree" revolver and a Jennie Wade souvenir dough tray. The rifle looks to be a representative of a Harpers Ferry musket or "Mississippi" rifle. I say that just because of the double strap front barrel band. However, there is no patch box in the stock. But what the heck, it's a kids toy! The lock plate, trigger guard, trigger, hammer and butt plate are made of metal. The barrel bands are made of tin. The stock and barrel are both made of wood. The wooden stock was originally finished in a dark walnut stain, but most of it is worn away. This one has seen plenty of Civil War play time! The wooden barrel is still painted silver. The lock plate and other metal parts were painted silver and all now show and mix of exposed metal and remaining silver paint. The lock plate actually functions, holding at half cock and full cock positions. It has an incorrect Phillips head replacement screw. Depressing the trigger causes the hard to strike the wooden nipple just like a real rifle would. The overall length of the rifle is 42". The revolver is anybody's guess as to the make and model. The cool part about this little "firearm" is that it was hand carved from a Cedar tree that was taken down during the fighting at Gettysburg. Hence the name, "witness tree". It measures 9 1/2" long. The cylinder shows two chambers, as well as the barrel being drilled out. Once upon a time it had a hammer, but that has gone missing in action. On the top of the barrel is stamped in black ink GETTYSBURG, PA. The last piece is a replica souvenir of the dough tray used by Jennie Wade. She holds the unfortunate distinction of being the only civilian killed during that horrific three day battle back in 1863. As the story goes, Jennie was in the kitchen of her sister's house making bread when she was struck in the back by a stray bullet and killed instantly. This little replica is made of cedar and measures 4 3/4" wide, 2" tall and 2 1/2" deep. The wooden has been lacquered and displays beautifully. On the top of the tray is a portrait entitled "Jennie Wade Killed at Gettysburg". Under the portrait in black ink it reads Gettysburg, PA. July 1,2,3 1863. On the bottom of the box an ink stamp reads Made at GETTYSBURG, PA. On the bottom side of the tray is a paper label that reads; "This is a model of the dough trya at which Jennie Wade, the only civilian killed during the battle of Gettysburg, was working at the time of her death. The original can be seen at the JENNIE WADE MUSEUM Gettysburg, Pa. Come to Gettysburg See America's Greatest Battlefield.
