This is an officer's pocket telescope from the Civil War era. It measures 17 1/2" fully extended and 6 3/4" when collapsed. There are no maker marks on it. It is a four section scope, with the main section covered in black leather. The leather has become brittle and shrunk with age. There is a separation where the leather was stitched together and the edge near the objective lens is flaking and broken. The remainder of the leather remains firmly adhered to the brass body. The optics work, but the dust cover for the objective lens is missing. The rear lens still has the dust cover, the little sliding cover works fine. This little telescope is the perfect size to carry around in a pocket, haversack or saddle bag. It would look good with an officer's display or a Cavalry scout's grouping.
