This is an excavated Confederate I button from the Civil War period. This two piece button is of coat size and has a lined old English I on the face. The back mark is blank. The face has a very small dent just to the left center of the I. There is no other damage or flaws with this one. The button has a dark bronze hue with some green showing on the face. The shank is still with this one, standing perfectly straight and tall! There is also an exact example of this button in Alphaeus Albert's book "Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons" on page 374, CS 177. We picked this one up and another just like it at the show in Denver back in May from a guy out of Missouri. He said this one came from an area of Springfield, Missouri near the site of the Battle of Wilson's Creek. This was the first major battle fought west of the Mississippi river.
