This is an non excavated Confederate South Carolina state seal button from the Civil War period. This two piece button is of coat size and has the South Carolina state seal with in a border and the motto Animis Opibusque Parati on the perimeter. The back mark is to faint for me to make out. The button was recovered near Fredericksburg, Virginia, many years ago. This one has a chocolate brown patina with just traces of gilt along the right edge of the tree, the perimeter where the motto is stamped and on the back where the makers mark is. The face has been pushed in in the center near the center where the Palmetto leaves begin. The shank is missing, probably happened when the pus occurred on the face of the button. There is an example very similar to this button in Alphaeus Albert's book "Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons" on page 244, SC 19. This will go well with your other South Carolina artifacts.
