This is a Model 1851 Colt Navy cap and ball revolver. The serial number 70473 puts this one in the production year of 1857. Quite possibly this revolver was in the south before the outbreak of the Civil War. The 7 1/2" barrel has very little left in the way of rifling, it's been fired in anger many a time! The single line Sam Colt New York address is barely visible. It seems as if the owner of this one didn't want any association with the North. The Colt patent mark and the cylinder scene have also been removed. The only markings are an inspectors K stamped into the left side of the trigger guard and the serial numbers. All the serial numbers match except for that dang wedge! It is unmarked but has obviously been with the gun for ages. The barrel, loading lever, cylinder and frame have all turned a dark gray patina, the cylinder being a little lighter shade. There is a little blue still on the barrel mostly on the bottom flats. The brass is without the silver wash, except for a very small trace on the top of the back strap. The brass has turned a golden patina, very eye pleasing. The walnut grips still retain most of the original varnish. They fit the gun like a glove and have only the expected nicks after 159 years of handling. This is a beautiful gun that most likely fought with some Confederate soldier during the war of northern aggression. Regardless of which side it resided with, this one will make a great addition to your Civil War weapons collection.
