This is a pattern 1853 Enfield that has been cut down for use in the Cavalry. This is the second one to make it's way into the shop in the past month. It came in on consignment with oral history of coming out of middle Tennessee. We all know how the Confederate Army made due with what they could get. Once they got something they didn't junk it just because of a little wear, tear or damage. The barrel on this one is 22", pretty much standard carbine length. It has taken on a dark almost black patina but has very little pitting on the exterior. The Birmingham proof marks are still clearly visible and indicate this is a .577 caliber. The bore is dark and heavily rusted in the upper half of the barrel. The ram rod is no longer with this weapon. There are no barrel bands, just a hand crafted iron band measuring 1 5/8" wide. The lock plate is stamped with a crown and Tower over 1862. It and the hammer have taken on the same dark patina as the barrel. The brass butt plate and trigger guard even have that dark aged look to them. The original rifle stock has been cut down similar to the carbine. The actual overall length is 38 1/2", a bit longer than a Civil War carbine. The cut down stock has taken on a dark look. There is an age crack on the right side of the stock 1 1/4" long to the rear of the lock plate. Just a stress crack that does not go all the way through. The left side of the stock is cracked from the front of the cut down stock to the end of the barrel. This appears to be another crack due to the age of the wood. Here's another chance to own a Civil War weapon, probably Confederate used, for a small investment.
