This is a militia tin drum canteen from the Civil War era. The canteen measures 6 1/4" across and 1 3/4" wide. There are three sling guides that will accept up to a 1 1/4" strap. There is a 1/2" brown leather shoulder strap on this one. There are a few dents, but nothing major. The strap is in very solid condition with no crazing or splits anywhere. There is a very similar example in Mike O'Donnell's book, "U.S. Army & Militia Canteens 1775 - 1910" on page 75, canteen #90. The sides were made using a drop hammer to strengthen the body and increase the capacity, in this case just slightly. There is not a typical spout on this canteen, but instead a threaded neck to accommodate a screw on cap. It has a 3/4" opening. O'Donnell states that some units were issued these type commercial canteens at the beginning of the war when Army regulation canteens were not available. This design was copied by a number of southern tinsmiths. This is a nice example of an early war canteen. Every soldier carried one, regardless which side they were on. it will make a great addition to your collection.
