Model 1840 Light Artillery Sword

This is a Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber dated 1864. The Light Artillery Saber was issued to mounted artillery units. The overall length of the saber is approximately 38". The single edged curved blade measures 32" in length, 1 1/4" wide and has a 5/16" spine at the hilt. There is a broad fuller that measures 25" from the ricasso. The ricasso has stamping on one side only, showing US/64 faintly. The blade still retains a bright finish and has no nicks on the true edge. The brass hilt has attained a dark mustard patina with some mottled darker aging in spots. The only other visible stamp is on the left side of the knuckle bow near the pommel of the number 52. The wood grip is covered in black leather, showing the normal wear from 152 years of handling. The twisted brass wire is still very tight to the grip. The brass pommel is in the design of a Phrygian helmet. The four sided knuckle bow and cross guard curves evenly above the blade and across it with the quillon curving downward and terminating in a round disc. The iron scabbard is 33 3/4" long and is dent free. The scabbard has a dark brown/black patina with areas of grayish/silver showing through.The top suspension ring mounting is 3 3/16" from the center of the scabbard mouth. The lower ring mounting is 8 1/4" from the upper mount. The suspension rings are 1 3/8" in diameter. This saber and scabbard are in very good condition adn will make an excellent addition to any Civil War edged weapons collection.
