Update on the book! I manged to borrow a copy of Thillmann's book today. It most definitely talks about shortened blades possibly being imported by Justice. The new photo's from the book have been added to those of the sword. I hope this helps with any questions on the factory shortening of the blade. This is a relic condition Model 1840 Cavalry Saber that came into the shop today. The consignor had oral history of it being a barn find in Nashville, Tennessee many years ago. He also stated that the under length blade was a factory shortened and could be verified by John Thillmann's book, "Civil War Cavalry & Artillery Sabers". Unfortunately we do not currently have that book in the shop reference library. The overall length of the saber is 38", with a blade measuring 32 1/2". The blade has a 23" fuller and a 10 3/8" false edge. The blade culminates in a spear point. The leather washer is long since missing. There are no legible makers or inspectors marks on the ricasso. The brass hilt with two branch guard has no damage. The wooden grip is completely missing the wrap and only a sliver of wire remaining under the pommel cap. There are two age cracks on the wood. All the metal on this one, blade and hilt, have the in the black attic patina. This may very well have been a Confederate used weapon. Reasonably priced, this one would go well with your Cavalry edged weapon collection.
