This is a percussion 16 gauge double barrel shotgun from the mid 1800's. The shotgun measures 48" overall, with 31" barrels. The bores are dark, with moderate pitting. On the rib is etched I WEINBORNER IN FULDA. Apparently Weinborner was a German gunsmith in Fulda, Germany, but I have been unable to find much information on him. The lock plates have no makers marks, but are moderately engraved with a floral design. The left lock plate has one screw missing just forward of the hammer. The hammers are engraved with what appear to be whales. The actions on this piece is still very crisp, both hammers locking in half and full cock positions. All the iron has a very even eye pleasing light brown patina. The trigger guard, butt plate, ramrod guides and nose cap on the stock are all brass. They all have the same floral etched designs and matching golden patina. There is a sling swivel on the stock comb and a stacking swivel on the rear ramrod guide. Confederate cavalry were fond of their shotguns, especially early on in the war. I believe the wood of this half stock is walnut. It is in the style of a Monte Carlo stock, with a cheek rest on the left side of the stock. The stock has finely detailed checkering. There is a small piece of wood missing from the very bottom of the stock at the butt plate. The original ramrod is still with this beautiful weapon.
