This fine example cap and ball revolver is an early production Civil War era Model 1860 Colt Army in .44 caliber. The serial number of 19854 places this revolver's production date in 1861. The serial numbers of the back strap, trigger guard, frame, barrel and wedge all match. This particular Model 1860 is of the four screw type. These four screw revolvers were intended to be used with shoulder stocks. The barrel is stamped -ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA- and is very legible. The bore rifling is still crisp and has no pitting in the lands. The cylinder scene is still clearly visible as well as the wording "Engaged May 16 1843". The serial number and patent date are also very visible. The metal of the gun has turned an overall dark grey patina. The backstrap does have traces of silverwash remaining. The brass trigger guard also has traces of silverwash, mostly in the recessed areas. The brass has turned an eye pleasing bright gold patina. The one piece walnut grips show expected wear while still retaining the original varnish. There are no cartouches on the grips. There are a number of sub inspectors marks on the weapon. The letter T can be found on the top of the back strap and bottom of the trigger guard behind the trigger bow. The letter S is on the right side of the barrel above the wedge. The cylinder has the letters B and S. The nipples on the cylinder are all intact as well as some of the safety pins. The action is crisp and locks up up perfectly in the half cock and full cock positions. This is a very nice example of the major side arm issued to the Union troops during the Civil War.
