This is a Non Regulation Officer's Sword retailed by W H Horstmann & Sons of Philadelphia. The blade is bright with only two spots of discoloration on the entire blade. The cutting edge has no nicks or damage of any kind. The sword has an overall length of 38 1/4", with a 33 1/4" long blade. There is a stopped fuller that begins at the ricasso and measures 23 3/4" long on both sides of the blade. The etching on the blade is very crisp, you can see it from across the room! On one side the etching begins with the W H Horstmann & Sons Philadelphia mark. Above that is a patriotic scene of drums, shield, cannon, swords and a stand of flags. A floral designs follows and flows into a scene of another shield, long bow, arrows broad axe and a standard. Next is an American Eagle , followed by a scroll with E Pluribus Enum and finally another floral design. The opposite side of the blade is replicated with the difference being the letters US where the scroll work appears. On the ricasso is the King's Head stamp, indicating the blade came from Solingen, Germany. The leather washer is still present and the blade is as tight to the hilt as the day it was made. The steel hilt is in excellent condition, showing just a scattering of age spots. The quillon flows into the three branch guard which has minimal engraving. The back strap and pommel are of a piece design. Therre is a slight discoloration on the back strap due to handling. The marine wrap is absolutely perfect with no imperfections. The double strands of twisted wire remain tight. It's like this one has been in a time capsule somewhere and just got out! The steel scabbard is also bright in appearance and has no dents or damage. The steel rings and mounts show minimal wear. This is an absolutely perfect specimen of an imported sword sold by an American retailer for use during the Civil War. If you collect Northern Civil War items you should really give this one a hard look.
