This is a Model 1850 Foot Officer's Sword from the retailer of Schuyler, Hartley & Graham. The blade measures 32 1/4" long, 1" wide and has a spine 1/4" wide at the hilt. The overall length of the sword is 37 3/4". This blade originally had a bright polished finish but has began to turn a dull gray finish with dark freckling over the entire length of the blade. There are two or three small nicks on the cutting edge of the blade, they are shown in the pictures. There is a stopped fuller that begins at the ricasso and stops approximately 9" from the tip of the blade. Both sides of the blade are etched, beginning at the ricasso and ending 2" from the end of the fuller. One side is etched with the SCHUYLER, HARTLEY & GRAHAM NEW YORK. next to the ricasso. Above that is a very ornate floral design with a cannon and a stand of flags, more floral etchings with a patriotic shield, eagle and a scroll with E Pluribus Enum. The opposite side of the blade has the same floral designs, patriotic sysmbols and the letters US etched on it. There is no maker mark found on the blade. The leather washer is missing but the blade is still tight to the hilt. The brass hilt is in good condition, displaying a beautiful golden patina. It also has the decorative floral design on the quillion, guard and pommel. The wooden grip is covered in marine skin, with three strands of wire. The wire is just a little loose, but the skin remains tight to the grip. The knuckle bow has been provisioned for a sword knot. The scabbard is metal with brass colored mounts and drag. The majority of the drag now has the copper showing. It is dent free and retains most of the original black jappan. The throat is missing. A very nice example of a Union used Infantry sword from the Civil War period.
