Looks like the Rebel went crazy picking up short arms in Gettysburg. This is a pattern 1853 Enfield that has been cut down. It came back from the Gettysburg show with oral history of Confederate use. Not sure what the reason was for the shortening of the weapon, barrel damage or shortened for Cavalry use. We all know how the Confederate Army made due with what they could get. Once they got something they didn't junk it just because of a little wear, tear or damage. The barrel on this one is 16 3/4", less than half the original length! It has taken on a dark almost black patina, except where someone has cleaned to reveal the Birmingham proof marks. The proofs indicate this is a .577 caliber. There is absolutely no rifling left in the barrel, it's been shot out! The ram rod appears to be an original Enfield that's also been cut down and had a button head attached. There are no barrel bands, just a piece of old iron wire wrapped twice around the stock and barrel. The lock plate is stamped with a crown and Tower over 1862. It and the hammer have taken on the same dark patina as the barrel. The brass butt plate and trigger guard even have that dark aged look to them. The original rifle stock has been cut down similar to the carbine. The actual overall length is 33", same as a Civil War carbine. You can see the outline of where the original barrel band was that has been replaced by the wire. The oak has taken on a dark look. There is an age crack on the right side of the stock about 5 1/2" long. Just a stress crack that does not go all the way through. The left side of the stock is a little rough all along the barrel channel. Either the stock broke or was cut down with knife. What ever happened, it occurred long ago. The area in question has been worn down smooth from handling. Here's a chance to own a Civil War weapon, probably Confederate used, for a small investment.
