This is an excavated US Cartridge box plate. The plate has been struck on the face between the letters and caused the plate to bend in the middle. The date of the recovery is written on the bottom of the plate in white paint "7-7-78". On the back of the plate written in black ink is "CS CAMP VERDIERSVILLE". The very center of the lead backing is cracked, probably from being struck on the face. This plate has two large brass loops instead of the usual iron ones. Both are present and standing tall. Verdiersville is the site of JEB Stuart's famous near capture by Yankee cavalry on 18 August 1862. In his haste to escape Stuart mounted his horse and jumped a fence to avoid capture. He had left so quick that he left behind his plumed hat and cape. This became a joke with his cavalrymen and a sore point with Stuart himself. Here's a cool little artifact with an interesting story associated with it!
