Excavated US Cartridge Box Plate
Item #: AA738
Excavated US Cartridge Box plate manufactured by W.H. Smith of Brooklyn, New York. Smith was under contract for 2000 waist belt plates and 2000 cartridge box plates in July 1864. In August 1864 he was under contract for 3000 cartridge box plates and 3000 bayonet scabbard tips. Apparently he had other contracts for plats before and during the war, as they have been recovered from many Civil War sites. This plate has taken on an even dark patina. The back mark of W.H. SMITH BROOKLYN is crystal clear. Both loops are still with the plate. The one on the left is bent, causing the push on the front of the plate by the S. This one came into the shop with no information on the location of the excavation.
