Fresh into the shop is this Model 1872 kepi complete with Cavalry insignia. This one has been there and done that! It has tons of honest wear and usage, complete with period hand sewn repairs. There is some moth damage around the body of the kepi. The front edge of the crown shows quite a bit of wear, especially around the crossed sabers. There is a pretty significant hand sewn repair to a tear on the back approximately 4" long. The tarred visor is still securely attached and shows evidence of wear along the left front edge. The leather sweat band is also securely attached and shows a ton of stain caused by wear. The shadow of a makers label is there, but is not legible. The chins strap appears to be a soldier made replacement from period bridle leather. The two buttons are period correct general service buttons. They are back marked but the buttons are so tight I didn't want to risk breaking the stitching to see who made them. The crossed saber insignia of the Cavalry is attached to the kepi by four brass loops. The insignia has taken on a beautiful golden patina. This one could have belonged to Old Bill as seasoned as it is. And he wasn't one to give up on a garment just because it had a little age on it! Indian Wars collections are incomplete without one of these!
