This small sword is very similar to the 1767 French Grenadier Sword described in Harold Peterson's book "The American Sword 1775 - 1945" on page 8, item 3. These swords came into the hands of the Colonial Army when France entered the Revolutionary War on the side of the colonials. The short curved blade measures 23 1/2" in length and is 1 1/4" wide at the hilt. The sword has an overall length of 28 1/4". It has a false edge that extends back 6 1/4' from the tip of the blade. There is a shallow single fuller that runs from the hilt to the beginning of the false edge. The blade some pitting and in a couple of spots. There is scattered age spots over the entire length of the blade over a dull gray patina. The brass knuckle bow, langets and quillon are cast as one piece. The plain back strap and pommel are cast as one piece. The ribbed grip is still wrapped in leather, but there is no wire wrap. Another Revolutionary War era weapon priced to sell!
