A very rare brass hilt British made short sword or "hanger" from the Revolutionary War period. The sword was manufactured between 1745 and 1760. These pattern swords have been identified being used in the Napoleonic wars fought between 1795 and 1815. They were also known to have been used in the US during the American Revolution. The tapered single edge blade is slightly curved and measures 23 1/2" in length. There is one small nick in the blade approximately three inches from the end of the blade. A single fuller extends 17 3/4" from the hilt. A cresent moon and three six point stars are stamped onto either side of the blade. The blade is a light grey patina with spots of darker aging. The grips and pommel are formed from a single piece of cast brass. The guard is in the shape of a heart with a small quillion. On the back side of the guard are two stamps, the number 7 and the letter I. These are the only markings to be found on the sword. It does no come with a scabbard. The overall length of this sword is 29". An example almost identical to this one is shown in the book "American Swords" by Stuart Mowbray as plate 75 b. Another chance to pick up a great looking piece of American history.
