This is the third Robert E Lee article we've got in the shop in the past month. This photo of General Lee is the first one taken of him after the surrender at Appomattox. It shows Lee seated looking to his right. He is wearing his uniform, his frock coat unbuttoned and open. His vest is partially unbuttoned and it appears his watch chain is exposed on his left leg. Cabinet cards are larger than the more common CDV's. This one measures 5 1/4' wide and 7 1/4" tall. The corners of the card are rounded. The bottom right corner has been folded over at some point and has left a crease in the card. There is an 11/16" border on both sides and the top of the card. The bottom has a 7/8" border to allow for the photograhy studio's trademark stamp. There are some stains and light smudges on the left, right and bottom borders on the front of the card. The back of the card has several smudge marks, mostly finger prints, on it. In period ink in the top left corner on the back is the number 241. In pencil is written "First photo taken after the war" and below that Gen Lee. At the bottom of the card on the front is the photographer's trade mark. It shows M. MILEY & SON CARBON STUDIO LEXINGTON, VA. Here's an opportunity to own a photograph of what is arguably the most famous General in American military history.
