This Non Regulation Foot Officer's sword was produced by the firm of W. Clauberg of Solingen, Germany. It was purchased and assembled by the firm of Schuyler, Hartley & Graham of New York City for use by the Union during the Civil War. The sword and scabbard are complete and in good condition. The slightly curved blade measures 31 3/4", 1" wide with a 21 1/2' stopped fuller. The very tip of the blade has a ding, could be knocked down with a file in a couple of seconds. The blade still retains an overall bright sheen with a small amount of surface pitting near the last 8" to 10" of the blade. Both sides of the blade are etched, both on the ricasso and the blade. The left side is etched with W Clauberg Solingen with a standing knight on the ricasso and US with floral designs on each side of it on the blade. The right side has Schuyler Hartley & Graham New York on the ricasso, an American eagle with a banner in it's mouth with E Plumibus Unum and floral designs on either side of it on the blade. The word proof is engraved on the spine just forward of the hilt. All engraving is still very visible and crisp. The cutting edge of the blade has two small nicks. Nothing terrible, just mentioned for accuracy. The leather washer is still reporting for duty. The large brass hilt/guard has the wide rolled quillon, American spread winged eagle in the guard over cut out letters US, brass ferrule and backstrap. The hilt is loose on the tang and has just a little play. I'm sure this could be fixed if the buyer desires. The hilt/guard flow into a decorative branch that ends in a wide sturdy knucklebow. The brass has taken on beautiful golden hue and hasn't been cleaned in who know's when. The grips are in good condition and remain tight to the tang. The wood handle grip is wrapped in a grayish colored shark skin. A small portion of the wrap is missing at the rear of the grip on both sides. The wrap is secured by one double strand twist brass wire and two copper straight wire strands. The wire is as tight today as when it was first applied. The scabbard is complete and measures 33" from the throat to the tip of the drag. The scabbard has taken on a brownish patina, with just a few areas showing the original finish. The throat, two mounts and drag are brass and contrast well with body of the scabbard. The brass mounts show moderate wear, as well as the drag. The throat is missing both retaining screws. The drag is missing one of the two retaining screws. Both mounts and the drag have decorative floral designs engraved on them. All the brass pieces have the number 46 stamped into them. Not sure if this was an inspector number, or inventory numbers. Either way, the scabbard and all brass components of it have the same number. This is an honest example of a Foot Officer's sword with original scabbard made by Clauberg and assembled by the firm of Schuyler, Hartley & Graham. Nice piece of Civil War history without breaking the bank.
