In the fall of 1861 the Boston firm of Augustine J. Drake agreed under subcontract to provide bayonets for 100 Model 1841 rifles being altered to the Linder breechloading system by the firm of Allen & Morse for the state of Massachusetts. Drake had previously altered several thousand Model 41 rifles by reboring them to 58 caliber and adding long range rear sights. This bayonet is the same as the one depicted in Robert Reilly's book, "American Socket bayonets and Scabbards", figure B82. It measures 22 7/8" overall, with a 19 7/8" blade and a 3" socket. The full length face flute is 18 7/8". The shank is very similar to Enfield bayonets of the period. The blade shoulders are rounded where they join the shank, a very unique feature. There is no US marking anywhere to be found on this bayonet. Instead there is the combination of A. 82 stamped on the socket between the locking ring and the shank. The large bore socket, .918", was designed to fit over the original muzzle of the Model 1841 rifle. The condition of this rare bayonet is a very even brownish patina. There is just a trace of the original bright finish around the top center of the socket. It could probably be cleaned up back to it's original finish, but that will be up to the buyer. The rifles these bayonets were modified for were issued to the 21st, 51st and 46th Massachusetts Infantry. If you happen to collect those units then this one is a must have for you. It will also compliment your Mississippi rifle or complete your bayonet collection!
