P56 Cavalry Carbine
Item #: AA711
Another Confederate firearm has managed to find it's way into the shop, this one coming out of Texas! A very nice P56 Cavalry carbine with a Barnett/London lock plate. The Isaac, Campbell & Company as well as the Sinclair, Hamilton & Company were known to have sold these carbines to the Confederacy. Over 10,00 of these carbines were purchased by the Confederate government and imported during the war. A few of them were imported during the early period of the war but the majority entered the Confederacy during the later part of it. This Pattern 1856 Cavalry carbine measures 37" overall, with a 21" rifled barrel. The bore on this one is good, the three grooves and lands very strong. This one could still be shot today. The barrel proof marks indicate this is a London barrel. Reading from breech to muzzle, the first mark is a lion rampant over the letter G. This mark is the London Provisional proof. The second is a crown over V, the London view mark. There is no number to indicate the bore diameter. The last proof mark is a crown over entwined GP for the London Gun Proof House. The rear sight base is present, but the two leaf sights are missing. The stock is in good untouched condition. There are some initials or letters carved into the left side of the stock comb. There are two hairline cracks on the left side, one on the flat by the barrel tang approximately 3" long. The other is between the barrel bands, approximately 3 1/2" long. These are mentioned for accuracy and they do not go all the way through the wood. There are no stamps or cartouches found on the stock. The captive ramrod is still present. It is attached to a lug under the barrel by a swivel and has a large button head. The sling bar and ring are also still reporting for duty, showing moderate wear. The butt plate, trigger guard and stock nose cap are brass. All have turned a very eye pleasing mellow gold patina. The rear barrel band, barrel, lock plate, hammer and saddle bar have the same even, dark patina. The front barrel band is brighter, a possible replacement. The lock plate is marked BARNETT over LONDON with a small crown forward of the stamp. Behind the hammer is a stamp of a crown over TOWER. This is a good example of an imported Confederate Cavalry weapon used during the Civil War. Perfect for your Southern Thunder Johnny Reb collection!
