The hits just keep coming, another rare Confederate artifact just in on consignment! The remnant, approximately 4" wide and 6" tall, is of a Confederate saddle blanket made of Spanish Moss. This particular piece is part of the Spanish Moss blankets recovered in Nashville, Tn in the mid 1990's. During excavation for the construction of a mall, a Civil War era trash pit was discovered 21 feet down. Boots, saddle parts, shoes, civilian and other military articles were found remarkably well preserved. The Spanish Moss woven blankets were commonly used by the Confederate Army, primarily in the Western theater. There are arsenal records that indicate that they were also issued to the Army of Northern Virginia. The main reason for their use was money. Cotton and wool blankets were selling for $40 each, while Spanish Moss blankets could be bought for $2 each. Confederate arsenals at Macon, Augusta and Atlanta Georgia as well as Memphis and Nashville Tennessee issued thousands of these blankets during the war. The Macon arsenal alone issued 8470 blankets between the months of June 1863 and February 1864. Here's another great opportunity to own a well documented but rare Confederate artifact. Perfect for the Confederate Cavalry collector, especially those southern boys that rode with Forrest!
