1873 Springfield Trapdoor carbine of the "Custer Range" serial number. This 45/70 carbine, serial number 40742 falls into the 1875 production year. The original 1873 stock measures 29.85 inches and has not been sanded or refinished. The butt has not been drilled to accept any cleaning rods or gun tools. The script P in a circle at the base of the trigger guard is very strong. The ESA cartouche on the left side of the stock to the rear of the saddle bar is very faint, but still visible. It is equipped with a first issue "high arch" 73 breech block assembly inscribed Model/1873/eagle Head/Crossed Arrows/U.S. The case hardening and oil quenching have resulted in a nice blueish gray patina. The lock plate sits flush with the stock, is not beveled and is marked U.S./Springfield/1873 with an Eagle to the left of Springfield. It has a first type, coarse knurled hammer and a three position tumbler. The sights are correct for an early production trapdoor carbine. The rear sight base is graduated from 100 to 500 yards, the leaf sight graduated out to 1200 yards. The range graduations are stamped on the right side of the sight base. The front sight is comprised of a stud, replaceable sight blade and retaining pin. The trigger guard has not been provisioned for a sling swivel. The trigger has a smooth surface. The iron butt plate is stamped US and does not have a trap door. The saddle bar is still attached to the stock, but the ring is no longer with the weapon. There are no inspector or proof marks on the barrel. It is equipped with the Model 1874 carbine band, stamped with the small u and the stacking swivel is stamped Pat M 31 74. This carbine is a correct, untouched survivor of the Indian Wars made famous by the massacre of George Custer's 7th Cavalry. It falls within the range of serial numbers that have been documented being issued to the troopers of the 1st Squadron, 7th United States Cavalry!
