The 11th saw it's first action at the battle of Seven Pines. The regiment was involved in fierce fighting and the Regimental Commander, Colonel Sydenham Moore was killed. Lt. Winn was then assigned to the staff of General C. M. Wilcox as his aide de camp. During the Seven Days campaign Lt Winn was mentioned in General Wilcox's reports for the performance of his duties during the bloody battles of Gaines' Mill and at Frayser's Farm. Winn was promoted to Captain and made Adjutant General on the staff of General Wilcox, now a Division Commander. Capt Winn performed admirably at the battles of Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, and Fredericksburg. He distinguished himself on the Plank Road and at New Salem Church during the battle of Chancellorsville, receiving a decoration for bravery. Captain Winn was involved at Gettysburg, where his hat was hit by a ball and his sword hilt struck by grape shot. He was again commended in official reports for his conduct under fire. During the seige of Petersburg, Captain Winn was wounded in the left arm at Spottsylvania Court House on May 12th, 1864. He was wounded again in the left knee on June 22nd, 1864 while trying to rally his old regiment, the 11th Alabama. Captain Winn died at Petersburg from the effects of his wounds on July 12th, 1864. Accompanying the Southern Cross of Honor of this brave and very capable officer is a letter drafted by an attorney from Demopolis, Alabama.
