Model 1859 McClellan saddle bags identified to a Confederate cavalryman. These came into the shop with documentation of belonging to a Pvt John Z Holladay of Company K, 3rd Virginia Cavalry. The bags were originally in Fred Morgans collection in Richmond, Virginia, obtained in 1940. Copies of Confederate muster rolls show Holladay being a Forage Master during March through October 1864. In the remarks section it states "Procures forage. This man was employed in this Dept. prior to his enlistment in this company. Application has been made to Genl Lee for his detail." Pretty good recommendation! The seat that connects the bags is torn in half. The leather of the seat is pretty dry and crazed. The bottom of the left bag has a large hole and the roller buckle is missing. Inside the cover of the left bag, written in ink is John Z. Holladay 3rd Va. Cavalry. Both leather straps to secure the bags to the saddle are missing. The right bag has a period repair to reinforce where the bag secures to the saddle. The torn seat could be repaired. These are still a very valuable piece of Confederate Cavalry history.
