Southern Cross of Honor presented to Pvt Robert A Briggs. Briggs enlisted in Co B, 2nd Kentucky Cavalry Regiment on 31 July 1862. The 2nd Kentucky Cavalry, known as Morgan's Cavalry, was organized during the summer of 1862. The unit was made up of men from Kentucky, Texas, Mississippi and Alabama. The 2nd was part of Morgan's Cavalry brigade and operated in Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio. Pvt Briggs was twice a prisoner of war, the first time just two days after his enlistment in a skirmish in Lincoln County, Kentucky. He was exchanged Nov 22, 1862 at Vicksburg, Mississippi. He rejoined the 2nd Kentucky under Cpt Murphy, commander of Morgan's body guard. Pvt Briggs was captured a second time on 20 July, 1863 in Southwest Virginia while trying to rejoin Confederate forces after Morgan's Ohio raid. He remained a prisoner of war until he took the Oath of Allegiance on July 28 1865. Briggs survived the war and returned to Nelson county Kentucky. He died 24 April 1923 in Shelbyville, Kentucky. This Southern Cross of Honor comes with copies of muster rolls with various dates and extracts of two different UCV publications summarizing Briggs' life before, during and after the Civil War.
